4.27 As to the existence and nonexistence of n states of affairs, there are Kn = SUMMATION(v=0 to n, binom-coeff(n over v)) possibilities.

All combinations of states of affairs can exist and the others not exist.

Kn has the value 2ⁿ, according to Black (p. 215).
States of affairs are independent of each other is the idea here, presumably.
